ADD TO THE PRIZE POOL!

This tournament will take place in two parts:

  1. Saturday January 28th, 2017 at 1:00pm EST (GMT -5).  Swiss format tournament (6+ rounds), narrowing the participants down to the top 8.
  2. Saturday February 4th, 2017 at 1:00pm EST (GMT -5).  Single-elimination bracket format consisting of the Top 8 players from the Swiss rounds.

Settings and specific rules:

  • Platform: Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) or Nintendo Famicom (FC)

  • Game: Ducktales (1989)

  • Category: Any%

  • Difficulty level: Easy

  • Race timing begins at the stage select screen and ends when the character touches the treasure chest after defeating the final boss.

  • Using “Select” to heal your character is allowed.

  • Players may use original cartridge, flash cart, or emulation (FCEUX 2.2.0 or later, Nestopia 1.40 or later, BizHawk 1.11 or later).

  • If using flash cart, save states must be disabled.  If using emulation, the hotkeys for save and load state must be unbound.

  • The version of the game must be the North American (U) or Japanese (J), but not PAL version or any remake or port.

  • If playing on console, players must use an official NES or Famicom.  Clone consoles are not allowed.

  • Usage of arbitrary code execution or memory corruption is not allowed.

The first day of the tournament is a Swiss format and will be played from 1:00pm EST until the final round is completed. The number of rounds will be determined by the number of players, with a minimum number of rounds set at 6.  Players will be assigned to their first round matchup based on seeding by personal best time. If players have the same personal best, the more recent receives the higher-numbered seed. From there matchups will be based on record (e.g. winners from round 1 play each other, and losers play each other). After the Swiss rounds, the top 8 players according to win/loss record will advance and all other players are eliminated. Ties will be broken first by number of wins versus the tied participants, then by total completion time over all rounds, then by Median Buchholz score.  A win is worth 1 point. A draw (tie on SRL) is worth 0.5 points (intentional draws are not allowed). Losses are worth 0 points. Forfeits are not allowed, and will result in a time of 12 minutes for purposes of tiebreakers. Byes are assigned per Challonge Swiss rules.

There will be up to 3 feature matches each Swiss round selected by the organizers. Featured matches will have a staggered start time by several minutes.  Feature matches will have separate race channels on speedrunslive.com; all other racers will join a single general race channel.  The Tournament will have an approximate duration of 3 to 5 hours based on the number of Swiss rounds which is determined by number of entrants.  Players may drop the event in between any Swiss round and must inform officials of their intention to do so

The second day of the Tournament is a seeded single elimination bracket of the top 8 players who advanced from the Swiss rounds. The top 8 players will be seeded according to Swiss record and ties are broken using the same criteria as used in the Swiss rounds (number of wins versus the tied participants, then by total completion time over all rounds, then by Median Buchholz score).  The top 8 matches will be played on Saturday February 4th at 1:00pm EST. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are best of three races, finals match is best of five races.
