Mario Kart Wii Tournament Rules

General Rules:

  • Wiimotes and nunchuks will be provided.  You may bring in your own wheels, classic controllers, or gamecube controllers.

  • If your name is called for your match and you are not present, you will be disqualified from that match.

  • We expect fair gameplay.  Any normal gameplay is allowed, including shortcuts.  If anyone attempts to use glitches they will be disqualified from the tournament entirely.

  • Each player may choose whatever combination of character and cart/bike that they wish.  You may switch between races as well.  It's first come first served when choosing characters.

  • All races will be run in VS mode.

  • You will be broken down into GROUPS of 4 or less. Some byes will be given by random seeding.

  • The LIbrary will have the final say in all decisions.


  • Mode = RACE

    • Qualifying = 50cc/3 laps//3 races

    • Second Round = 100cc/4 laps/3 races

    • Third Round and beyond = 150cc/4 laps/4 races

  • No Teams

  • All Items - Normal

  • All Vehicles

  • All Characters (except Miis)

  • Normal COM

  • 1st and 2nd place advance

Stage Rules:

  • A random stage will be selected from the available stages

Qualifying Rounds:

  • All participants will take part in four qualifying rounds to determine seeding in the ## player bracket.  Depending on participation, the bracket may be reduced in size.  The Tournament Organizers will decide on race day.

  • 4 players for each Wii/Wii U.

  • In each qualifying round, every player will compete in three consecutive races within a single in-game cup (Mushroom Cup, Leaf Cup, Star Cup, etc.).  After the third race concludes, points will be awarded based on how the players finished in those three races.  Qualifying point system:    

    • 1st: 5

    • 2nd: 4

    • 3rd: 3

    • 4th: 2

    • 5th: 1

  • After the ALL RACES, players must keep the score screen up to allow tournament organizers time to record scores accurately.

  • The race cup used each round will be the same for all players, and will be revealed by tournament organizers the day of the tournament.

Tournament Bracket:

  • If a tie occurs during bracket play and time permits, a tie-breaker race will be used to break the tie.  If time does not permit, the best finish in the fourth race will break the tie.

Additional Rules:

  • In the event of an unexpected glitch or game freeze, the game in progress will be declared no contest’ and restarted.

  • Any DLC available on the competition systems will be allowed.

  • Personal controllers are allowed

  • Wii U Pro Controllers will be available for use.

  • Wii U Gamepads will  be available for use.

  • Wii Controllers with Plastic Steering Wheel will be available for use.

  • All rules are subject to change at the discretion of the competition organizers to ensure

  • fair play and to fit within time constraints.

  • Any intentional execution of a game-breaking glitch will result in disqualification.
