What is Kinnikuman?

Kinnikuman is a superhero and wrestling manga/anime from the 1980s; in fact, this year is it's 40th anniversary. It tells the story of Kinnikuman, the bumbling prince of Planet Kinniku, a superhero wannabe turned wrestler as he and his friends fight various evil superhumans. If you grew up in the US in the 80s, you might remember them from a toyline called M.U.S.C.L.E. Check out the Wikipedia page for more info.

...However, if you grew up in the early 2000s, you're probably more familiar with Ultimate Muscle, which aired on Fox Box around that time. Ultimate Muscle is actually the 4Kids dub of Kinnikuman Nisei, which stars Kinniku Mantaro (Kid Muscle in the dub), the son of Kinnikuman (King Muscle in the dub). So if you're familiar with Ultimate Muscle, Kinnikuman should be somewhat familiar to you. If you need a refresher, perhaps this catchy intro would help.

What is Muscle Grand Prix 2?

Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix 2 is a Wrestling/Fighting Game based on the Kinnikuman franchise. It includes almost all of the notable characters from the original series, as well as a few from Nisei/Ultimate Muscle, such as Mantaro/Kid Muscle and Kevin Mask. It was developed by the famous AKI Corporation, which developed many of the good wrestling games of the late 90s to early 2000s, such as WWF: No Mercy and Def Jam: Fight for New York. In fact, Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix 2 was one of the final wrestling games the company developed, released in 2008.

However, unlike a lot of the other Wrestling games released by the company, MGP2 is more similar to a traditional fighting game, with health bars, super meters, motion inputs and juggles. AKI Corp developed other Kinnikuman-based games that played more like a standard Wrestling game (and were even released in the US, in contrast to the Japan-only MGP2) but MGP2 is by far the most polished and mechanically sound as a serious fighting game. It is even still played at the Mikado arcade in Japan from time to time.

This description is already long enough, so I won't make it even longer by explaining all  of the game's mechanics here. Check out this FAQ for that. It is a bit outdated, but it should give you an idea on how to play the game; it is not terribly complicated to learn. Also, if you'd like to watch some more tournament footage for this game, check out this match database.

Unfortunately, the American community for this game is frankly non-existent, at least as far as I know. The fact that the game did not come out internationally is likely a significant contributor. However, we can change that! If you've made it this far, is interested in the game and is going to be at Combo Breaker 2019, then by all means enter. You have nothing to lose, and maybe even some extra money to gain. You won't need to bring your own PS2 controller; we'll lend you one so you can jump right into the game.

Let's make Combo Breaker 2019 the largest Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix 2 tournament in the United States yet!
